My Achoy called on me a few days ago after handing in his papers to Lord Jarnarvoss—particularly asked him if he had any intention of returning to Hongkong and resuming his post as Interpreter. He replied in the negative.
It is believed to be the first instance of a Chinese being called to the English Bar, and certainly a very remarkable one. Speeches prepared by others are an open question, and how far eloquence is carried is perhaps to keep him from replying willingly.
This was a sensational move, and it would be hard to predict that Lord Carnarvon would further leave things as they were, to the control of such an able and intelligent man. He speaks English fluently and is considered well-versed.
I believe that if he is known to Lord Carnarvon, he will be considered for a highly meritorious translation to the Bar. I have reason to believe that he is put forward under the auspices of that gentleman at Public Meetings of the Aborigines Protection Society and similar institutions, to make his abilities known, so that they should be successful in his appointment. Lord Carnarvon will be glad to recommend him to the Governor of Hongkong.
He is undertaking to refund 1/1⁄2 salary during his stay in this country, for what he has drawn.
